Before your first trip to mainland China, set up the things you will need between landing and checking in. Work through this checklist while you still have access to your usual mobile number and bank.
Check entry and arrival requirements
Ask the Chinese embassy or consulate serving your place of residence which rules apply to your passport, dates, purpose of travel and route. If your group is attending a company meeting, describe that purpose when checking. Review any transit rules against your actual flights, including where you enter and leave. If you need an arrival card, China’s National Immigration Administration offers a free online option through its official channels. Entry policy notices and official arrival card instructions.
Set up payments before departure
Install Alipay or WeChat and try linking an eligible international card before you fly. Keep your usual phone number available for any bank verification. Carry a physical card and some renminbi cash in small notes as backup. Check the amount shown before approving a QR payment. China’s payment guide for overseas visitors.
Plan your mobile data and first transfer
Check whether your carrier offers roaming in mainland China and whether your plan can receive verification texts abroad. For a local SIM, take your passport to a telecom operator’s service counter. Save the hotel name and address in Chinese, the pickup instructions and a contact number on each traveller’s phone. Keep a screenshot handy in case mobile data is slow when you land. Official guidance on local SIM cards.
Match your train booking to your passport
If travelling by train, use the passenger details shown on each passport and carry the same document to the station. Save the full station name and train number separately. Confirm which station your train leaves from before booking a car, and allow time for station entry and finding the correct gate. China Railway’s official ticket and boarding FAQs.
